Working with the audio platform Detour and collaborating with former members of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense David Hilliard, Emory Douglas, and Billy X Jennings, I wrote and produced a phone-based, geo-located walking tour in North Oakland. The tour visits a number of historically significant sites – Huey P. Newton’s childhood home, the Panthers’ first headquarters, etc – activating hundreds of discrete sound elements along the path (including music by the Panther’s house band, The Lumpen). The tour was featured in the Oakland Museum of California’s “All Power to the People: The Black Panthers at 50” exhibit last Fall.
Here is an NBC Bay Area article about the tour, and here is a KALW segment that features five minutes of the tour.
The entire tour can be listened to on the Internet Archive here.

A personal documentary that explores the filmmaker’s ambivalent relationship to his mother’s physical disabilities and chronicles his attempts to be at peace with her suffering and disfigurement. It is a mixed-media portrait, alternating between the present – in which his mother battles a staph infection and prepares for a major surgery – and recollections of the filmmaker’s past. The film draws upon a variety of poetic evocations, including recreations of childhood memories, to express the love and anxiety, and the protectiveness and dread, that has defined his relationship with his mother.

The Beyond Bullying Project asks “what happens when we think about LGBTQ sexuality in schools beyond risks like bullying, poor mental health, and dropping out”. What about love, family, friendship and even our favorite movie and television stars? How do these stories of LGBTQ life come up and what does school need to do to make room for them?
Using a video storytelling booth of their own design, the Beyond Bullying Project team collected hundreds of candid audio, video and written stories from high schoolers on three US campuses: in Minneapolis, New York City, and San Francisco.
